'Memories of the Curlew' is based on the life of Gwenllian, daughter of the King of Gwynedd, who became known as 'The Welsh Warrior Princess'. At her birth in 1096, the famous Druidic bard Meilyr predicted she would become a great leader of the Welsh. Married to the young Prince of Deheubarth, she supported his mission to build a new Welsh army, while raising a young family in the extreme conditions of life in the mountains. The military struggle was mirrored by personal conflicts, with Gwenllian emerging as a true Welsh heroine. Her story is one of passion, courage and honour, and gives a fascinating insight into Welsh life at this turbulent time.
Memories of the Curlew The story of the Welsh Warrior Princess Gwenllian edition by Helen Spring Literature Fiction eBooks
This is a historical novel about the Welsh princess Gwenllian, daughter of Gruffydd. She is a historical figure, and one of the few recorded cases of women leading men into combat in the middle ages. The novel traces her life and struggles against the Norman invaders who were imposing their rule over Wales after their invasion of England. She is often compared with the Celtic woman leader Boadicea. The novel portrays Gwenllian as unusually beautiful and brave. The characters were well drawn, and the dialogue had no false notes. I did not that sometimes actions seemed out of character. This is partly due to a novel about real people, who sometimes do unexpected things. Perhaps some foreshadowing would have made the scenes more powerful. But this is a minor point. The novel is well done, and sure to be enjoyed by historical fiction fans.Product details

Memories of the Curlew The story of the Welsh Warrior Princess Gwenllian edition by Helen Spring Literature Fiction eBooks Reviews
The author appears to have struggled to imagine enough history to fill a novel based on Gwenllian's life. The book is filled with many male characters of the time, with emphasis on their exploits.
It took me a few chapters to get into the flow of things. I had difficulty keeping track of who each of the people were, and the timeline didn't make sense at first. But then I got caught up in the story and the next thing I knew, I was at the end of the tale (and had tears in my eyes). Well done!
Another good read about the struggles to decide who would rule what areas in Britain. I was unfamiliar with Gwenllian before this book and enjoyed learning a little about her. I would certainly read more about her and by this author. I love this era of history and the fiction written around it.
This is a terrific read about the Welsh royals and nobility in the time of invasion by Henry I, or Beauclerc.
Gwenllian, a Welsh princess, is a lovely and unusual woman - she trains for battle with her brothers to the extent that she is an expert swordswoman and tactical fighter. Her life unfolds and is enthralling as it tells of her loves and her full life. Well fleshed characters, well written and sensitive love scenes and heart wrenching tragedy.
Thank you, Helen Spring, for a couple of days of real reading enjoyment!
